Featured Racer: Scott Childress Click on Picture to Visit Scott's Bio Page 5/15/10 - Long Race Day...Long Race Report!! Limited Sportsman - J.R. Hartley gets another win but loses the an opportunity to double up on a caution flag call by race officials. Gary Warbinton shows the Limited Class he is now a force to be reckoned with. Most of our race reports begin with our Sportsman Class leading the news just as in Nascar the Cup leads off. This report will take on a different beginning by letting the Limited Class take a well disserved spot in the heading. I'll start off by saying we all witnessed a fantastic day of racing in the Limited Class. Many of the Limited racers charged their way to the front, fought for the lead, took the lead, gave up the lead, swapped it back again & again without laying the bumper to each other. Even in the heats, the racing saw less cautions than normal. Is it possible these races have been doing their setup homework along with some testing and practice...? You betcha! Limited Sportsman Main Race One: Gary Warbinton would be on the pole with his "TQ" after two rounds of heats. Once the green flag dropped, Gary would lead the first eighteen laps towing Steve Hartley, Mark Sanders, James Warbinton, J.R. Hartley & Steve Jefferson in a freight train fashion. On lap twenty-three, new comer Mark Sanders took the lead in his 48 numbered machine with a setup pass like a veteran would use. Sanders also displayed these same skills in the earlier heats. His lead would be just six short laps after a caution between he and Gary slowed the field. Meantime, the young sensation J.R. Hartley had been working his way forward from his fifth place starting spot. Running third at the time of the Warbinton/Sanders caution, J.R. had the lead fall right into his hands. From this point, J.R. switched over to PlayStation Arcade mode and raced his way to another convincing win. The top five cars were all on the lead lap and all five turned in fast 6.2 laps in the race!!! Limited Sportsman Main Race Two: By now, darkness had settled on the track and racers were wondering if their setups would hold into the race. Gary Warbinton would get the nod to start on the pole again in the second main. Leading early up to lap seventeen, it was so much as Gary's setup going away, as it was J.R.'s coming in. Moving to the lead, J.R. had intentions of finishing out the night with a win just as he did earlier in the first main race. Things looked to be going his way even with a few short cautions keeping Gary close. Around lap forty-eight, Gary's setup allowed him to match or better J.R.'s lap times. by lap sixty, Gary had caught J.R. and made his pass. On the latter part of lap sixty-one, a caution unfolded while J.R. was making his way under Gary's car for yet another lead change. The two battling front runners were coming off turn four & had not crossed the finish line once the caution was thrown. By our judgment in the scoring booth, the pass had not been completed at the time of the caution. Therefore, J.R. was moved back to second place. The green fell once again on the field on lap sixty-four. This would give J.R. eleven laps to challenge Gary for the lead. J.R. shadowed Gary's every move. He gave himself a car length to allow for a run at five to go. Another short two lap caution on laps sixty-nine and seventy would keep the two leaders on edge. Green flag falls on lap seventy-one giving J.R. another shot with four laps to go. Can J.R.' get it done? Can he get by Gary in such a short distance? Can he double up on the day? We will never know. An incident in the back of the field on lap seventy-three would force the race to finish under caution ending any hopes J.R. had of sweeping the mains. BUT, all in all the Limited Sportsmen class put on a very clean and competitive day of racing. These guys should be very proud of themselves for putting on a great show!
Sportsman - Will Landers has dominate day. Sportsman Main Race One: "B" Main - Cliff Scales, Mike Clark, Eddie McCray & David Popham would advance out of the "B" main into the "A" "A" Main - Will Landers has many starts on the pole in the Sportsman Main events but Robby Robinson had other plans by taking TQ in the first "A" main. Robbie took the green flag with plans in tow by leading the first four laps. I'm sure he felt good about those plans until he lost the handle in turn three giving the lead to Will Landers. This also allowed Allen Johnson and Bob Claussen to get back eventually settling Robbie into fourth . At this point, Will set the pace until lap thirty-seven when he was collected by a lapped car. This would send him to the rear of the field giving the lead back to Robbie for a stint. The race would then take on a Hockey Game feel as several cars found themselves either checking or being checked into the boards. With several racers swapping the lead and cautions continuing to fall like the Dow on Wall Street, Will Landers was slowly and methodically working his way through the cautions back to the front. On lap ninety-five, Will took the lead back and would not be challenged but one time on lap 126 when he open the door to let Mike Clark sniff the fresh air but immediately slammed it back in his face on the next lap. Will would go on to win Race One of the Double Main day. Sportsman Main Race Two: The Second Sportsman Main Race would see the field start from the final results of Race One. This put Will Landers on the pole. Once the green flag dropped, Allen Johnson "AKA Gas Hog" moved quickly from third to second and commenced to harass Will Landers for the lead. These two would be just about bumper to bumper as the field worked it's way closer to the fuel break. On lap sixty-eighty just seven laps short of his scheduled fuel stop, the nicknamed "Gas Hog" Allen Johnson dropped off onto pit road with his car running out of fuel. By the grace of a caution just before the lap seventy-five fuel break, Johnson found himself only three laps down. With the field turning 6.4 second laps things could have been much worse for Johnson. As the field rolled off pit road after the break, we looked for other racers having good runs to make their moves on the leader. It seems as if the break worked against these racers by keeping the second half of the field fighting for any spot that could be gained. Nevertheless, Will Landers kicked it back into high gear and laid waste to the rest of the field. Landers would not challenge for the remainder of the race keeping his closest competitor "Mike Clark" about two car lengths of his rear bumper. Landers completed his sweep and dominance just as the club imposed curfew fell on the track. Super Trucks - Eddie Dunn in his first truck race, gets it done. The Super Trucks weren't slated to race this weekend but when we have enough show up in any class, they will get track time. Three trucks took qualifying time and the results shoed Eddie Dunn as the "TQ." In the first fifty lap heat, there would be nine lead changes. All three trucks seemed to have ever changing setups during the first heat.. Leading once on lap ten, Mike Clark finally made a pass for the lead on lap forty-one to take the lead again. He would go on to win the first heat. In the second heat Mike Clark would lead to the half way point. At that time, Eddie decided that he had seen enough of the 75 truck out front and put his 14 numbered ride in the front. Eddie would check out and take his first truck heat win. Paul Hill would fall out on lap twenty-three after a mechanical issue on the back stretch. In the main, there were only two trucks starting. Mike Clark would start on the point but it was obvious Dunn had other plans himself. Eddie took the lead on lap two. He did not relinquish the lead until lap twenty but on for a couple shorts laps. At that point he had the top spot on the podium in mind. Eddie went on to collect his first main event win. We had a great day of racing and looking forward to the next one! From The Co-Chairs: We look forward to another great season of racing at Lagoon Park Raceway, home of the Capitol City Racing Club. I would like to encourage all the competitors that enjoy our racing facilities to join and support our club. The success of LPR and QSAC racing in Alabama depends upon the success of the Capitol City Racing Club. While it is true that the track is located on Montgomery city property, the race track itself was built and is maintained by the Capitol City Racing Club. We receive no support what so ever from the City, financial or otherwise. Without your support, racing at Lagoon Park Raceway cannot exist. The membership voted to change the club leadership to Co-chairman. The intent being to add continuity to our leadership, and hopefully make it easier for others to step up and serve. We also added a Tech position this year. Allen Johnson will head this up and you will hear more from him on this at the track. So get the QSAC rulebook and start going over your cars! We have already made some changes that we feel will make racing at LPR in 2010 exciting. We are running two separate series again this year. The Club Championship and the Super Series. We are hoping to see some Sprint and Grand National action this year, especially in the super series. We are hosting the QSAC NCS race again this year, and of course, our BHASC in memory of Boyd Hughes. GASCAR will also be running two point races and joining the fun at the BHASC this year as well. So, there will be plenty of racing action available at LPR this year. Let's remember to “HAVE FUN- BE RESPECTFUL-AND RACE HARD” David Popham Mike Clark
